I am reading the excellent memoir “Hunger” by Roxane Gay. In it she experiences a gang rape at 12 which utterly destroys her.
She turns to food and wants to feel safe m being bigger.
And her family, especially her father keeps asking her to fix her problem and lose weight which only increases her misery.
And helps make her 20s an extremely difficult time.
We need to learn to love our bodies at any size. They allow us to exist. To explore the world. To think. To pet cats.
We all deserve love, we are all beautiful. By trying to make thinness an ideal not only can we hurt people who are heavy. We can also create at atmosphere where bulimia and anorexia are common.
We need to learn to love ourselves. And love the bodies that we have. We can all learn to be beautiful.
It’s far better and far healthier.
