I just watched last night’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” in Puerto Rico.
Even before the devastating hurricanes, the islands were in tough shape.
$70 billion plus in loans that should already be forgiven. The bill was there but didn’t pass. We need to stop paying off hedge funds and the rich not just in Puerto Rico but around the world.
And no one in the country trusts the government to do the right thing. There is a bond agency that can close schools and hospitals. So many taxes for those who can’t afford it. It reminds me of the failed austerity measures enacted around the world by the IMF and World Bank.
And 90% of agricultural goods imported mainly from the mainland United States. A sausage producer can’t even find local pork shoulder. Puerto Rico should work to feed itself.
And with the Trump administration’s terrible handling of the hurricane, Puerto Rico deserves the chance to be free of the United States. Or the chance to become a state and to vote in elections.
The current system must isn’t working. I have faith that Puerto Ricans can work hard. I have faith for a better future but they need help. Forgive their debts and help them rebuild. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the humane thing to do. We can and should do it.
