I’ve really gotten into NASCAR this year. And they made a fun change. Stage racing where the first ten places in a stage get points from 10 to 1 with a playoff point (which carry over after points are reset for the playoffs )
For instance in tonight’s Monster Energy Series Cup Race in New Hampshire there were 300 laps. 75 in the first stage, 75 in the second stage and 150 in the final stage at a just over mile track.
I think a lot of teams, drivers and especially commentators have undervalued stage racing. If you win both stages but finish 16th that’s 40 points and 2 playoff points. If you finish 2nd overall but don’t place in the stages that’s only 35 points and no playoff points.
It’s a bit confusing but I believe the finish is 40 points plus 5 playoff points for the winner and then 35 for second, and then one less point per place. So 4th 33, and 7th 30.
It also allows teams that did well early but have a mechanical failure, a speeding penalty in the pits or a crash to still get points.
I just think it makes everything more fun and is a huge advance for NASCAR.
