I just finished Ray Bradbury’s book of essays “Zen in the Art of Writing”. ***1/2
There a lot of good stuff in it.
From keeping images that can make a story later to writing with zest and gusto. Or the fortunate events that turned “The Martian Chronicles” from a bunch of short stories to a classic novel.
I was most struck though that it took him ten years of writing a thousand words a day and a short story a week until he had something really good.
Luckily for him and us he started at 12. There is something to be said for doing the thing until you get good at it.
Things don’t often come easily.
I personally find writing stories difficult, but blogging and especially Three Good Things very easy.
But, I definitely recommend working on things and getting better.
I blog every day. If I didn’t, I would probably only blog a few dozen times a year.
Not all of it will be good. And that is perfectly okay with me, but it’s crucial that I do it each and every day.
Good practices matter, even if the results aren’t always obvious.
