I went to the Martin Guitar company today in Nazareth, Pennsylvania and it was great to see craftsmen and women and artisans making great art that can make beautiful songs.
It’s amazing how cheap guitars can be seeing all the work and time that one is there.
One of my hopes with hipsters and millennials are that artisan culture is coming back. I think it’s true in coffee, beer, spirits, clothes, etc.
One of my favorite books is the short nonfiction “From Bauhaus to Our House” by Tom Wolfe. It’s amazing and sad that we went from Craftsmen houses that you could literally order from Sears with all sorts of interesting and distinctive touches. And the Art Deco movement to big glass buildings and bloc housing. Sometimes architecture doesn’t make things better.
And we have become a society who uses cheap products. It’s not what you want. Things used to be built to last, not built for the lowest cost possible by Wal-Mart.
I hope and pray it gets better and I think it is. Little stuff like Etsy helps too.
