I have to say I had more fun tonight playing my new gift Dominion: Empires with my wife tonight than Friday Night Magic last week.
Dominion starts even. Everyone had 7 one money cards (coppers) and everyone has 3 one victory point cards (estates). Draw 5, one action, one buy, discard everything, draw again, shuffle in purchases.
Magic: The Gathering isn’t close to even. Different experiences, different deck design, different deck costs. Decks can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It very quickly gets absurd. “Only 20 dollars” for a hot plainswalker card. Takes less than two of those to buy a Dominion set.
I really do like Magic but it gets absurd so fast. And I don’t want to pay more than a buck or two for a card. I know my red/green landfall deck is fun. I also know it’s not competitive with the mono white combo or the control decks. It’s less fun when you go 0-4 like last week. Part of that might have been my draw.
I think I will go to the next prerelease and some FNMs but there is a reason we own all eleven Dominion sets and I haven’t played Magic in years. It just gets insane so quickly.
Still looking forward to playing with a black/blue control deck tomorrow. Although 36 cards and 24 lands goes fast.
Magic is a great game because it’s neverending and keeps expanding. It’s also annoying for similar reasons with a lot of the rules.
Overall I really do prefer Dominion. Although Magic: The Gathering is a genius game.
