We are creatures of stuff.
George Carlin has a great bit where he talks about how we keep needing more and more stuff, and more and more space. Oh no we have too much space, less get more stuff. Now we have too much stuff for the space lets gets a storage space for our stuff which is never used.
I am a creature of stuff. I grew up in a house with a lot of stuff, especially books. And I accumulated a lot of stuff, especially CDs, LPs and books. I even called myself a media junkie.
And all that junk is a ton of stuff. Still haven’t gotten some of it out of the house. But, it’s time for a lot of it to go. If I haven’t used it in two years do I really need it.
I just watched the new documentary, “Minimalism: A Documentary” yesterday morning and today on Netflix. Good stuff. Although, I can’t see living out of s suitcase for a year or a couple suitcases for 4 years. Although, it seems sexy to me. The life of a vagabond, travelling all over and talking about it. I still want to do “The Poetry Conversation” podcast. There are so many great stories out there that deserve ears.
And stuff does hold us back a lot I think. We are a consumption culture, filled with debt, misery, bills and stuff. I do see great changes soon though.
We live in digital times where you can have a Kindle or even a cell phone for books. Where you can have an iPod, computer, phone or Echo for music. You don’t need all the things which means people are traveling lighter.
And I do wonder a lot about leaving high school debt free and then immediately signing huge debt in student loans and expensive debt with credit cards all over colleges. Living debt free is a great privilege that I think we lost somewhere in the “American Dream”. Which seems to include debt for colleges, debt for a home and small boxes of what success should be.
I really enjoy movies that make me think. Good stuff. I love how many great documentaries are accessible on Netflix. I’m also glad I have a DVR now to see the wonderful stuff on shows like Independent Lens on PBS.
Having less things has been a goal of mine for a while. Maybe it should be one of my 2017 goals. Less really can be more.
