So spent $5 on KFC last night and it was disappointing. Disappointing enough that I posted this tweet: Contest: #KFC didn’t cut it, give me your favorite fried chicken recipes, winner gets a Mix CD #fb
Then I went down the street at Bull Moose and looked around .. considered some bibles went down to the 50 cent book table and found 2 books:
Bringing Down the House by Ben Mezrich: I really enjoyed Mezrich’s “Sex on the Moon” and curious about this tale of MIT math geeks and blackjack. A book that was on my list.
The Paris Review: Beat Writers at Work (ed. George Plimpton): Interviews, articles with the beats from the Paris Review. The Beats is one of my favorite literary periods. Looking forward to geeking out.
Then I found one of my favorite things at Bull Moose, the music grab bags. Ten CDs for 97 cents. Often with lots of fun stuff.
Come See Me (Single) by 112: Meh
Sugar Ray (Sugar Ray): Not too bad
Eytan and the Embassy (The Perfect Break Up): No idea
Rubia and Hernandez (High Plateaux): Not sure sounds atmospheric
Motown’s Biggest Pop Hits: All #1 on Billboard’s Charts: Pretty full of awesome, have a bunch of these already. But good stuff like Baby Love, I’ll Be There, Let’s Get It On, War, ABC, The Tears of a Clown …. Nice.
The Best of Three Dog Night: One of my mom’s favorite bands. Pretty cool.
Duran Duran – Decade: One of Lanna’s favorite bands growing up, had a huge crush on Simon LeBon. Pretty sweet, giving this one to Lanna after I burn it.
Auntie Christ – Life Could Be a Dream: Looks loud and obnoxious
Fin – BNL: No Clue
Se7en: Appears to be the soundtrack, pretty sweet.
Pretty cool grab bag with Duran Duran, Motown, Three Dog Night, Se7en. ***1/2
Destiny’s Child – The Writing’s on the Wall: not bad, possible single.
Movin’ Out (Original Broadway Cast Recording): Was much more of a Billy Joel fan in HS then now, still very curious.
Hipstrumental: Instrumental hip-hop??
Madonna – Ray of Light: Huge Madonna fan, I already own this. Her two best are still Like a Prayer and True Blue.
J to the Lo — The Remixes: Why not, potentially could be fun.
Matador Records album Unclear of artist: Potentially good. Good label. From 1993.
Secret Samadhi: Not sure, world music?
NSync *(1998): C’mon, feel the cheese
Egyptian Heiroglyphics: No clue
Avril Lavigne “Let Go”: Looks like a single
If didn’t own “Ray of Light” would be cool. Curious about the Matador album and Movin’ Out. **
Jimmy Buffett – License to Chill: Not a Parrothead but not bad.
The Light of Love: The Music of Discovery Weekend (1997) Maine Cancer Research & Education Foundation: Intrigued looks like mostly Marc R. Morin. Not sure where this is going, but intrigued.
Sheryl Crow – Tuesday Night Music Club: I liked “All I Wanna Do” is have some fun back in the day. Before Sheryl Crow got really, really annoying.
Dave Matthews Band – Under the Table and Dreaming: Not a huge Dave Matthews fan, but wondering if I will like this. Pretty good.
Third Eye Blind – Blue: Not bad, not bad at all
Orange CD with graffiti style graphics: No idea
The Best of the Velvet Underground: Absolutely fantastic album that I already own. I think this is going into my CD changer in my car, I still have a backup
Black and White album with 4 American flags: No clue
Overwhelming Colorfast – Two Words: no idea
Orange album with Yellow Cowboy: Curious
Best of the Velvet Underground is an amazing album. Lots of decent stuff. ***
Red with yellow flower and stars in the center: No idea, intrigued
Cure – Paris: Hoping this is “The Cure” if so sweet. Yep, sweet.
Micheal Fakesch – Dos: No idea
Orb – Orbvs Terrarvm: Looks electronic to me, could be totally wrong
Kidz Bop 8 – Make it stop — may burn it then break it as a prayer to aggrieved parents.
Liqwid: Looks lame
Motorhead – March or Die: Not my music, but curious. That Lemmy gets all the girls.
Queen – Greatest Hits: Had the Queen – Greatest Hits We Will Rock You Edition .. but not this .. sweet.
Faithless Reverence: Sounds annoying and loud
CD 2 (live) – Chris Isaak? – Had Wicked Game, strangely only 6 tracks.
Pretty cool, pretty neat. Have a similarish Queen album, and don’t really have The Cure. ***
Backstreet Boys – Millenium – C’mon, feel the cheese.
Liz Phair – Somebody’s Miracle: She looks gorgeous these days, curious to hear.
Smile Up! – Some teen pop star: Looks like annoying pop music
Porno for Pyros (1993) with little devil: Saw Porno for Pyros at Rutgers, nice grab.
The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots: Said “Whoa, Nice!” when grabbed this. Saw the Flaming Lips with Beck in Claremont, CA (dress rehearsal show and lots and lots of fun). Wicked!
Deutsche Grammophon: The Color of Classics: Franz Schubert – Gesang der Geister uber den Wassern (D 714), Symphony No. (D 944) – Monteverdi Choir: Enjoy good classical
Live – Throwing Copper: Not Bad
LIFTED or The Story is in the Soul, Keep Your Ear to the Ground: Cool artwork
CD 1 of Chris Isaak? : Decent
CKY? Volume 2: Disc 1: Not sure
Love the Flaming Lips. Happy with Porno for Pyros, Liz Phair, and Schubert. ***1/2
I think that’s not bad for $5, how about you. I did use $2 of half off on 2 of the CD grab bags to have it be only $5.
Tell me about some of your favorite Independent Record Stores. And I would be loath not to say that Bull Moose started National Record Day which is in 2 weeks on March 21st. Check out Bull Moose online too.
