I finished the excellent “Stone Butch Blues” by Leslie Feinberg today. It’s fiction but based on truth. It wasn’t long ago police would raid gay bars and arrest, beat and rape women. Unfortunately, the rape by police officers of inmates is all too common still.
Of butch women being attacked for not being “normal”. It’s true for effeminate men too.
Of wanting to take hormones to pass as male and make life easier.
Of not being able to renew a license and change the gender, which is still an issue.
Of being afraid to be with your trans partner in public.
We are doing better now. Gay marriage is very nice, but we still have so far to come.
Just think of the bathroom bills passed in North Carolina just a few years ago.
Or parents threatening kids who dare use the bathroom of choice.
Or of all the trans people raped, beaten or killed.
It’s something I hope improves quickly. And I hope and pray it will.
