There may be no stranger comparison.
Poetry written by thousands, enjoyed by a few, no money.
Golf loved by millions, on TV every weekend, people arrange trips around it, tons of land, tons of space.
Poetry, largely an indoor activity, although often inspired by the great outdoors.
Golf, can be played indoors, but it’s basically a TV simulation. The whole point is being outside.
Both are passions of mine.
Poetry in the last few years, golf in the last couple months.
Both are addictive.
Writing poetry, begets more poetry as Billy Collins explains so well in his “The Trouble With Poetry.”
The problem with golf, is it makes you want to play more golf. Get new clubs, play new courses, travel, spend a fortune. On lessons, on balls, on travel, on greens fees, on cart fees.
Poetry is cheap, you just need a pen and some paper and a window.
Golf is expensive, you need clubs, green fees, travel expenses, balls, tees, gloves, shoes…
I love them both, and have only so much leisure money. So I may see a little less poetry in this short golf season, I think it’s only through October in Maine. But as the golf dwindles the poetry gets even better and I am lucky in Portland, Maine to have 3 amazing poetry night. Rhythmic Cypher with music at 7pm at Slainte on Sundays. The unmiked Mama’s Crowbar reading in a small bar around 9pm on Monday, and the oldest reading in town the Port Veritas reading at Local Sprouts on Tuesday at 7pm. They are all great.
And I’m lucky to be in a place, where I can experience both and love both.
On Thursday, I went out and played 7 holes of golf in the rain with my friend Tod at Freeport Country Club. On Saturday, I walked 12 holes at Twin Falls in Westbrook. Tonight I hit on the range at Nonesuch River Golf Club.
On Sunday, I got to read 4 pieces on a quiet night at Rhythmic Cypher which is great. It’s also wonderful, if I remember to listen to let the music slow me down and interact with it.
Also getting to have a poetry and meat weekend with friends in New Hampshire this weekend I can’t wait.
And I do want to get in some holes at Twin Falls and/or Nonesuch River this week, or even maybe Freeport Country Club.
