I was challenged by my friend Melissa Geathers to share a poem tomorrow. I know tomorrow is only a day away but it’s easy to forget.
And my choice was very easy. “Having It Out with Melancholy” by Jane Kenyon. https://m.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/having-it-out-melancholy
It’s a longer poem, but I think it expresses depression better than almost anything I have read.
By discovering this poem in a book about depression from many authors, I got a chance to find a new favorite poet. Which is a very rare gift. And her book “Constance” is my favorite poetry book of the year. I’ve already read it several times.
It was also beautiful to read her essays and the love her husband Donald Hall had for her as she died all too young of leukemia in her early 50s I think. Donald Hall’s book of poetry and letters to Jane after she died “Without”, was also beautiful.
I challenge you to share a favorite poem too. There are so many beautiful ones.
