I did my weekly trip to the Ansonia Public Library today and I saw that Mayor Corsetti was considering defunding library staff.
This would be absolutely tragic.
For one, I like many people frequently use the library. It’s books, the Bibliomation system and the newspapers and such. It saves me hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year.
And I would be willing to give more too the library to help it run as much as I can.
Second, buildings can easily start to have issues when closed. If you effectively close the library by cutting almost $400,000 of a $600,000 budget, the library might have to close it’s doors. When that happens the books and building will start to deteriorate. And that would be absolutely tragic.
Third, it’s not just used for books. I’ve seen people use the computers to apply for work. People have used it to do taxes and get tax forms. It’s also safe place for people to go that’s not their house.
Extreme cuts on the public library are an absolutely terrible idea. And I will do all my can to change this terrible idea. I guess Ansonia lost state money for education. But, that should have been resolved with higher property taxes. Not with a decision to close a library that could easily become permanent.
