I am a Unitarian Universalist, I really think that the celibacy vow for priests and nuns is outdated and the history of it is so the Catholic Church can gain land.
I did like that Pope John Paul II working for the poor and for hope.
But, Pope Benedict is a disaster. Now he is going after nuns because they support Obamacare, because they want to see more people get healthcare. Don’t go after nuns for the strange anti-abortion, anti-family planning doctrines of the church. Almost all Catholics use birth control, American Catholics have politics across the board.
Nuns take a vow of poverty, they take a vow of chastity, the work for the poor and social justice. These are the words and works of Jesus. I wish I could say the Pope would apologize for his silly comments but I don’t think that is going to happen. Until the Church in Rome works for social justice and stops fighting for silly politics, Catholicism is going to continue to wane in America. As a Unitarian who is used to extreme congregationalism and huge amounts of congregational choice the whole idea of the power of Rome frankly confuses me. Here is the NYT column by Nicholas Kristof that started my rant, “We Are All Nuns.” In the fight of nuns vs. the Church, I am with the nuns.
What do you think?
