New York, New York

Next Saturday will be my first overnight in New York since January 2005. We used to live there at 151st and Broadway (Harlem Heights/Lower Washington Heights) from visits to Lanna in January-June, 2003, before moving there in June, 2003 – January, 2005. All I have been since then is to drive up the Henry Hudson, or once the Cross Bronx. And to get some fried chicken at Crown Fried Chicken at 149th and Broadway in the old neighborhood, much better than anything in Maine.

For city stuff I usually just make the two hour relatively easy trip to Boston in the bus, train or car. New York City is a good 6 drive from Maine.

Looking forward to staying in a hostel bed again, I haven’t since I had my first date with my wife January 18-20th, 2003 where we met at the Gershwin Hotel, which has hostel beds. So yep, it’s just over 10 years since I have known Lanna. And it’s been a good decade.

And looking forward to seeing two shows at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade theater to see some long form improv. Lanna took 3 classes at UCB and I took when I lived in Manhattan.

And also looking forward to seeing the wonderful Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt at the 4th Universalist Society of New York on next Sunday which is just a block south of the American Museum of Natural History at 76th and Central Park West.

And at $29 for a hostel bed for the Broadway Hotel and Hostel I could do this again. Now if I can get some nearby street parking to 101st and Broadway. May take some driving around.

9 years ago I was deciding what to do next.

Around thanksgiving weekend in November, 2002 I had my 10 year reunion at Montgomery High School and decided to be in New Jersey for a while.

I packed up all my stuff in California in storage and was wondering what to do next.

Decided it would be fun to look at some dating sites including nerve.com personals (part of Spring Street networks) part of a website I still like.

On January 2nd, 2003 I saw a profile for someone who wanted, smart and funny, and tall and funny and .. and funny .. I liked the sarcasm and silliness in the profile and decided to instant message her.

We chatted for a while and decided to have a date 9 years ago today January 18, 2003 at the Gershwin Hotel in New York City at 26th and Madison, approximately, which was also near where she worked. They had hostel beds there and I had stayed there in the past.

There was also a concert that night with someone I worked with a little in LA, Cody ChesnuTT who was opening for blues/soul legend Bobby “Blue” Bland at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. We met took the subway to Brooklyn, decided to try some West African food which was delicious and saw the show.

The connection was instant, the night wonderful, and a one night date, turned to a weekend together and 9 years later a wonderful marriage and life.

I love you Lanna Lee!

This was inspired by her blog post today:

Anyone else have a good how we met story?
