Doing a Haiku Deathmatch tonight at Dobra Tea at 7pm (Dobra Tea is just above Bull Moose and Videoport on Middle Street in Portland).

Did write a few haikus on Tuesday. But had a good run laying down in bed last night and this morning.

I like this round and may use a bunch of them in round 1 tonight (1st round 3 rounds of best of 3; 2 round 3 rounds of best of 5; 3rd round 1 round best of 7; 8 poets in slam).

I like this bunch. I wrote most of them on Twitter tonight and in the last 24 hours. There is even a form called the Tweetpoem that just needs to be 140 characters or less, haiku almost always qualifies.

Tolerance forces
Phone banks, door knocking
Celebrate victory

Forces of tolerance
Fundraising, phones, door knocking
Celebrate victory

Blinded by science
The curious one keeps asking
Discovery is fun

Beware of poison ivy
Leaves of three let them be
and watch out for Joker

Heaven’s door knocks
Not ready, I’m just not ready
The reaper will wait

The songs of rainbows
Infrequent, beautiful, double
Reading connections

The songs of rainbows
Beautiful, double, infrequent
Connections, reading.

The active mind
Wanders from topic to topic
You don’t stop with play

Attention deficits
Watching television, phone, computer
Attention to nothing

Attention deficits
Watching television, phone, computer
No comprehension

Hungry Hungry Hippos
Love the taste of plastic
Shoot it out butts

Jay and Silent Bob
Blond one, talks much, says little
Quiet brings wisdom

Curiosity Roves
Over red sand, rock, cold
Scientists cheer, cry

Insomnia time
Hours confusing light and dark
Naps be the rub

Insomnia time
Hours confusing light and dark
Napa be the rub

Sometimes are whining
Sometimes are joy, laughter
Wine rids of whine

Beer marvelous beer
The cause of and solution
Of all life problems

Knowing glances
Sly looks, wanting to ask, afraid
Take the glorious risk

Stacked, seasoned
The wood waits, prepares
Toasting winter

The sly youthful smile
May hide with age and wrinkles
Always eyes twinkle

November’s cold
Approaches the house without power
On comes the light, heat.

Haiku deathmatch
Rounds of poets, jokes told
Fun had, laughter

Rhythmic Cypher Dobra
White, Black, Gourd, Hummus, Desserts, tea
Gratitude, Wordplay

Rhythmic Cypher Dobra
White, Black, Gourd, Hummus, Desserts
Gratitude, Wordplay, Tea.

Sometimes are whining
Sometimes are joy, laughter
Wine rids of whine

Lights come on
After two weeks dark and scared
Families rejoice

The bare tree blows
up and down with the wind
Waiting for winters coat

Tree bare for winter
Reminds us that
The green will return

Darkness comes early
the birds fly from cold
Mainers hibernate

Mainers hibernate
Have stores of wood stacked
Toasting winter’s fire.

We are made of stars
Atoms from distant stars
Exploding, collapsing

Let’s bring the A game
Why bring the A game
The A game sucks.

28 poems today/tonight. Awesome and I actually like most of them. I think the one’s I did tonight in general were the best. My favorites Darkness comes early; lights come on; sly, youthful, smile; Curiousity roves; stacked, seasoned. Haiku is a fun form. Looking forward to tonight.

Haiku to Slam

Going to do a haiku slam on Sunday, so need to write some haikus.

Have to get in haiku spirit.

I noticed the jokey stuff wins, so doing that over traditional haiku.

Let’s see how it goes.

A day to vote
a day for democracy
no more commercials

Listening to jazz
Hanging out with dad
Music binds us

I need to write
Haiku, to stir the spirit
and laughter.

Playing bingo
at assisted living
Getting trounced.

The winter tree
Blows with the wind
Misses its limbs

Hours of tension
Waiting for months of work
Hoping to cheer, cry

And not a haiku, just a short poem.

A long drive
To Pennsylvania
Dad diminished
Not the same
More demanding
Different
Loves his jazz
Very particular
I know he wants to be home
Needs to get his left side working.

The poet

The poet
watches, sees, listens, observes.

As people
Eat, mingle, talk, look down, drive.

Takes information in differently.
Sees the beauty in an old car, seagulls, pigeons, trees, rain.

Sees the sadness.
Takes it in.

Listens to the self.
Takes it in.

Knows there is always more out there.
But sometimes what it really takes to see it is the silence.

Not all conversations come from talking.
A lot of the deepest thoughts come from listening.
To your heart, nature, the world, your mind, your madness.

Sees the madness.
Comments on the madness.
Is sometimes part of the madness.

And also knows to observe, to read, to watch
To pick up cadences, to steal them.
To pick up styles, to use them.
To pick up his/her own way of seeing and develop of voice.

My poetry voyage is still young.
I am curious where it takes me.

I love slam.
Love the Portland, Maine community.
Love the support.
Love buying chatbooks.
And still discovering, always discovering.

So far this year discoveries include Philip Levine’s “What Work Is”
Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s “A Coney Island of the Mind,”
Carl Sandburg’s “Chicago Poems.” All entirely different.

Being both awed by and sometimes find repetitive Bukowski.
And listening, always listening.

For listening helps you bring the words.
And the words bring performance.

So listen, it’s harder than it sounds sometimes.
Do it anyway.
Or just find a silent place and write.

For me the woods bring good haiku.

Haiku Slam

Made the mistake of bringing actual haikus on nature to a Haiku slam. The 3 I read were.

The birds sing in
The coming spring, waiting
For friends to arrive (loss)

Black flies in all
of their splendor biting,
Feeding, tis the season (win)

Red buds, green buds
Birds returning to branches
Welcome to Spring (loss)

Wish I had 3 out of 5.

Some other poems I wrote for Haiku Slam, next time I will go more for silly.

Bird shape through cloud
Times of migration north
Time of the long day

Mornings of wonder
Kitties bring fitful sleep,
The wonders of working.

Creators, artists
Sharing their joys, their tears
Their beautiful works

Remember to pause
Remember to think
Remember rest

New life
Awakens from the holes
Scared of the cold

Fucking tired
Needing to write poems
Time to slam

Dominion with
Lanna, time for laughs
Time for games

Day of renewal
Spring beginning
Sins forgiven, Peace.

Opening Day
Time to believe again
Even for Cubs fans

March Madness
Time for gamblers
And pools

Marshall stacked
Walls of sound
Take it to 11

Spinal Tap
Musicians being silly, playing
Having absurd fun

Mornings up slow
Letting the day drift in
One sip at a time

Looking forward to it again next time.

Poetry slam tonight was epic. Great job by everyone. Congratulations to Kayla, Nate, Wil, Lulu and Heidi. Poetry makes me happy.

Haiku for the New Spring

March 20, 2012 by rurugby Leave a Comment

Today is the first day of Spring.

A time to celebrate the coming of the warm time of the year.

The mud that turns into the greens and flowers of Spring and Summer.

A time for Rites of Spring, for rebirth, for Easter, Passover.

A time of graduations.

A time of new beginning.

A time of beautiful days interrupted by days and of wind and rain.

A time to appreciate how amazing green and color is after the browns of winter.

Here are some haikus I wrote, some on a hill near Allen Avenue UU on the Portland Trails on Sunday, some now:

The birds sing in
The coming spring
Waiting for friends to arrive

Birches lit by sun
Wind blowing lightly
Nature waking from slumber

Canope of trees
Birds sing their caw
The Cathedral of Nature

Morning smells of bacon
Potatoes frying
Big, family breakfast

The rocky hill saved
Suburbia surrounds
The trees rejoice to Spring

This is a time to appreciate the brown
Appreciate the dormant
The greens and color coming again

The spring comes with sun
The snow melting
The ground renewing

A time to celebrate
The equal day
The equal night
The coming of warmth
The coming of green
The coming of rebirth
Let it come

Happy Spring!
