We are blessed in Portland, Maine to have outstanding restaurants.
My recent favorite is the homestyle German restaurant, Schulte and Herr. In a town of excellent food, the potato pancakes there are literally the most craveable dish in town. Rich, delicious, fabulous. I personally like them best with the amazing cream cheese/sour cream/paprika spread they have for their fresh rye bread. There is also an excellent applesauce with it. For the Sour Cream/Apple Sauce they are $5, with lox $9 (I usually get the applesauce). And you are going to get want to get one for each person on the table. One and a half potato pancakes each is not enough.
What else is worth getting there. I would say in general the entrees are the weak point (still good but not great) the goulash is my favorite, and the exception is the Sunday roasts that look ridiculously amazing. My favorite sides (haven’t had the garden salad) are the cucumber salad, roasted beets, squash, lentil and pumpkin soup, and sauerkraut.
The only disappointment I have had so far was at breakfast Sunday, the grilled raisin bread with syrup. Far too sweet, would have loved it if I was 8. Overall ****1/2
One of the things it makes me wonder about is why is there no homestyle French or Acadian restaurant in Maine. It is traditionally the secondary ethnicity in Maine. Just a simple, lovely place with simple lovely food. The closest I can think is the dish memere, at the Frog and Turtle in Westbrook. Memere is a Sunday brunch item (used to be every day at the French Press) and is 2 poached eggs, with creton, a slow cooked French pork that has a hamburger consistency, comes with outrageously good dijon mustard for $5.50. But, simple delicious food that Francophones grew up with in Maine in places like Lewiston, Biddeford and Brown St. Westbrook is something I would love to see.
Schulte and Herr is fantastic and I have been recommending it to people all around Portland. It is on Cumberland St. 1 block west of Preble and open 8am-3pm Tuesday-Sunday (closed Monday) .. Breakfast 8am-11:30am … Lunch 11:30am-3pm .. Potato pancakes all day. Mmmmm Potato Pancakes. They really are that good.
