This has been a very tough week for my family.
My father in law, Walter Maheux was diagnosed with lung cancer that has metastaticized to other parts of his body.
The prognosis is not good.
One of the things that has helped me as it always does is music.
Specifically the music of Johnny Cash.
I think he may be even passing Bob Dylan to be my favorite artist of all time, and certainly the one I have turned to most during this crisis.
Here are some of the songs I have found powerful.
It’s also appropriate because my father in law is a huge old school country music fan.
What I am listening to right now is possibly my favorite Johnny Cash song, his amazing Nine Inch Nails cover, “Hurt”.
Beautiful and haunting.
Another song that made me happy and sad, was Cash’s beautiful cover of the Beatles, “In My Life.” His rich life takes this gorgeous song to a whole new level of richness.
Here start the tears, just gorgeous, a song about living a rich life.
Next is one of my favorite songs ever, one of I have loved forever in the Simon and Garfunkel version, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Johnny Cash gives a whole new gravitas, to a gorgeous song.
Another gorgeous Johnny Cash cover is his version of U2’s “One.”
Lovely cover, of what I think he said may be the best rock song ever written.
And one of my favorite Johnny Cash songs came from his last album American VI: Ain’t No Grave, and one of my personal goals to have a “Satisfied Mind”.
I have no doubts that my father-in-law Walter Maheux has a satisfied mind. He is living a rich life, with a wonderful family and friends, and so much love.
And thank everyone for your thoughts, prayers and best wishes, it means a lot.
