I grew up in New Jersey, a non deposit state. I grew up with having to seperate all of your recycling which is mega-annoying, and a waste of time. And frankly to me in the age of mixed recycling, I think the deposit system is simply a waste on resources.
You end up paying for every bottle/can you use. Having to have a can and trash bags to put your recycling in, and it just doesn’t add up to much.
Did 3 big trash can fulls today and it came to around $7.50. And this is after one of the bags fell and caused glass to be in my car, and scared me and had me worrying about the kitties.
It’s extra space in supermarkets, extra processing …
Frankly, I just think bottles and cans should be part of your mixed recycling in the big blue cans.
My friend Peter said that the deposit law causes people to look at bottles and cans as nickels, which helps keep Maine cleaner. He may be right.
But alas for me, I mainly simply see it as a waste of resources and space.
What are your thoughts on bottle and can deposits?
