Where the Wild Things Are *****

One of my favorite books of all time.

I even have the t-shirt.

I have loved it since I was a little boy and never stopped.

Because we are all Wild Things. We all have a sense of play. We all dream. We all adventure. And sometimes we need to play with our monsters.

Checked it out of the library a few weeks ago, read it here, read it at Port Veritas, still want to read it at Rhythmic Cypher.

Now I own it.

Already read it 6-10 times in the 3 weeks I rented it. At least 3 times aloud.

And now you can watch me read it.

We love and miss you Maurice!

The Feast of Life

Yes, the feast at Rites of Spring is actually on Sunday night, but Sunday is my spirit theme. Today I will speak of the bacchanal of Rites.

It is a time of mead, of good food, good Bacchus homebrew. For me a time this year to share some nice Partegas mini cigars. To connect, to chat randomly and wonderfully. To see people I have not seen in a year, yet whose faces still give me smiles. It’s wonderful.

This year I want it to be Bardic. To be full of stories. The poetry slam/open mike my wife hosts. The Bardic Circle the Nordic/Vengali tent hosts. To be writing poems and haiku. To just be in the woods.

And to just love the feast of life. Having good food, drink and conversation with amazing people.

It is amazing and I love it.

Wonderful Day

Had a wonderful day today.

The sun was shining, my parents are in town, have the day off from work and got to do some wonderful things.

First was the Men’s Breakfast at my church that I haven’t been to in a while. Contributed and cooked some amazing sausage from the Herring Bros. Market in Guilford, ME that is made on site. The breakfast sausage was very good, the garlic sausage excellent and I will be buying more next time I am in town. (It’s almost 3 hours away). As always the conversation was excellent, and love that it’s a safe place to talk and the sharings are confidential to the group. It’s important to be able to have a safe place to be listened to, and to laugh with amazing men.

Then I went out to lunch at the fabulous Dancing Elephant in Westbrook, had some great Indian food and got to share lunch with my parents (who live in Allentown, PA now about 8 hours away) and my mother in law, and edited to add my fabulous and lovely wife Lanna Lee Maheux. (Who by the way is a fantastic blogger and podcaster.) Great food, the lunch buffet is an excellent value at only $9.99 from 11am-3pm Monday-Saturday. Although next time I get the Keema mutter I will ask for medium spicy (mild was not enough).

Then I went to my favorite place in Westbrook the library and picked up a book of Philip Levine poems via Minerva and got a book about Fried Chicken. I am desperate for good fried chicken and need to try the recipes. I will let you know how that goes.

Then with the stunning weather in the 70s I went to the East End boat launch with my parents and just sat down and read by the water, this was their favorite time of the day.

We then went to Mama’s Crowbar for the release of the Prince Tuesday collaboration beer with Maine Beer, Rising Tide and Allagash. I thought the beer was good but I liked the Maine Beer Lunch and the Clown Shoes White better. The food from local sprouts was excellent, particularly the wonderful Sea Salt and Caramel Gelato from Maple’s Organics. Had some wonderful conversations. Great beer, good times and finally got to meet @beerbabe who I have been following on Twitter for a while.

Just a wonderful day. I am very grateful to have such wonderful parents, to live in a beautiful place, and to have my dad after his Brain Cancer almost 4 years ago now. He’s a medical miracle, I am very lucky.

Cherish the Spring, cherish your friends, cherish your family.

Adam Yauch, 1964-2012

Sad to hear that Adam Yauch died yesterday at only 47 years old to cancer. I was a late arrival to the Beastie Boys, I remember someone in my dorm, Shoreland Hall at the University of Chicago, LOVED the Beastie Boys but it took me longer to get into them. But they are one of the bands of 1980s.

Here are some of my favorites.

#1 No Sleep Till Brooklyn.. Great merging of rap and rock, like Walk This Way in a way.

#2 So What’cha Want – One of the best summer cruising songs ever. Just makes you smile.

#3 Fight for Your Right – Ok the demands of the suburbs just aren’t as harsh as Compton.

#4 Girls — Adolescent and silly, Girls, Brooklyn, and Fight are one of my favorite 3 songs in a row ever. Yep this video is full of lego.

#5 Sabotage — Shockingly found out this is not in my iTunes yet, that’s just not right. Fun stuff, awesome video.

#6 War – feat. Edwin Starr — Amazing remix of the 1960s classic.

#7 Brass Monkey — More adolescent fun. Yep, Licensed to Ill is my favorite Beasties album.

Rest in peace and thank you for the smiles and laughs.
