Thoughts Turn To Golf

Went to Goodwill to drop off some clothes today, and looked through some golf clubs.

Got a 5 metal, pitching wedge (Ping Eye), a putter and a gap wedge (which I didn’t have). Spent 10 bucks which is not bad.

The snow is melting.

The mud is coming.

And in a month or so can get back on the course.

I am amazed how much I enjoy golf. It’s just a good time. Frustrating with the occasional good shot.

And lowered expectations is a good thing. Looking forward to playing Gorham Country Club more this year, and believe it or not little Twin Falls Golf Club in Westbrook on Spring Street which I pass every day.

I am pretty terrible and don’t even have a handicap yet.

So if you want to walk the course (or ride I guess) looking forward to playing in Maine’s short golf season. Spring is coming, golf is too.

Cart vs. Walking

I had a good day today.

Slept in.

Had a delicious lunch at the Dancing Elephant.

And got to play golf.

With some positive feedback on social media I got a free round at the very fun and challenging Sunset Ridge Golf Club on Cumberland St. in Westbrook (going towards Windham). It used to be called Westerly Winds and looks like it will be an 18 hole course soon. It is also the insanely cheap price of $5 to walk this year in the few weeks left in Maine’s golf season.

I asked if could ride a cart and they said yes and even got a free drink. Very cool. And got 20 found balls for $10 because I know I would lose a few in the marshes.

And I enjoyed the cart. It is less work. But there is something kind of awesome about walking. It’s quieter. You don’t have to worry about making tracks. And it’s more spiritual in a way to just walk the course. Although it does wear you out more, especially when your back hurt in the morning.

I think I will walk courses more than the cart in the future. There was times I wanted to just put the clubs on my back.

What do you prefer cart or walking or the rolling cart? I see a lot of people choosing all 3.

All I know is it was a beautiful day to go golfing. And I know winter isn’t far away.

It was also great to see Dave Jacquet perform and see some friends at the Frog and Turtle tonight.

Definitely a great day.

Today is a Good Day

Today was a good day.

I slept in.

Got some time with the kitties, had leftover steak for dinner.

Am back in Maine.

Dad is back in inpatient rehab at Good Shepard.

Let my mother in law’s kitty Loki out, and able to find him in the dark.

And the big thing for my spirits is I got 14 holes of golf in at Gorham Country Club.

My finances are such that the $22 I paid for the twilight rate (after 3pm (included 3 used balls for $2)) was still a sacrifice with my bank account.

It was great to be concerned with terrible drives, putts and chips instead of actually important things. And the family at Gorham Country Club runs it really well. Would highly recommend the course and I am sure to go back. Although it priced much better for walking then carts. And I have to learn to stop topping the ball.

Tomorrow I am back to work, hopefully I can get through a work week without being drawn back to Pennsylvania. That will be good for my bank account. Not working for 3+ weeks this month has not.

And should feel good to get back to my routine again. I know it felt good to play golf today. Feels good for Squiggy to be adorable and Lenny to be a nudge.

And it’s awesome that my wife Lanna is doing a digital salon with 6 guests tonight. Thank you to Candace Karu for hosting.

Today is a good day.

And the moon even looks beautiful. Could use some more good days.

If not for the impeding illness with my dad, and wondering what’s next. Today would be a great day.

Slept in. Went to lunch at the fantastic “Dancing Elephant” an Indian restaurant down the road. Played a fun, and challenging little par 3, 9 hole at Sunset Ridge, and an ok little mini-golf course (did get one hole in 1, both for only $5 (yep a steal).

Got laundry done, watched a little US Open, listened to a little music in the park, and had delicious poutine, steak salad and an Allagash White at the Frog and Turtle with my fabulous wife Lanna.

But, I wonder what’s next. Looks like my dad’s brain tumor is back. Don’t know if there may be surgery as soon as next week. Don’t know if I will have to go to Pennsylvania for a while. Don’t know how much time there is left with my dad. Feeling like it might be just a few months. I feel lucky to have him this long but not ready to let him go. Especially with my wife Lanna, losing her beloved father just a few months ago.

I have rested a lot the last 2 days, had a total crash day yesterday. This is tough. And it’s really hard to be an 8 hour drive a way (at least). So I appreciate everyone’s prayers and have to take this one day at a time.

Chipping and Putting

I am officially addicted to golf. And I am just that tall with late evening shadows.

Today I was chipping and putting on the practice green at Gorham Country Club. I discovered I am much better from the fringe with the putter and rediscovered how maddening golf is. Of course, that happens every time.

I also miraculously putted from the fringe right into the hole, which shocked me. Good to play on an undulating green and keep learning about my putting and to keep trusting my instincts more.

I think I am improving my putting the most, at least today. I am sure I will find new ways to three putt (or more) though.

Golf is insanely fun. This week I look forward to trying the new par 3 9 hole at Sunset Ridge for $5 and next week look forward to taking advantage of the twilight deals at Nonesuch River Golf Club or Gorham Country Club.

And tomorrow back to more poetry.
