Luckily, the chair umpire was not the story in the US Open Men’s final today.
Novak Djokovic played extremely well and beat a very good if tired Juan Martin Del Potro in three sets including a very long second set.
What chair umpires do a lot in most matches is announce the score and constantly quiet the crowd.
I feel like tennis would be more fun if the fans did cheer during the points. Certainly better than the background chatter I heard at Arthur Ashe Stadium, especially during the women’s night matches.
If the line calls are harder to here just give the line officials portable microphones. They provably already should at major stadiums like Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong.
And it just might increase the fun.
Now, I don’t think yelling to alter the serve is cool but a loud, involved crowd just seems a lot better than saying please be quiet after every point.
What do you all think?
