Tennis has a lot of weird rules.
The prohibition against coaching during matches is a big one.
Especially since almost everyone does it.
It was called against Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou in the final versus Naomi Osaka tonight and considered a code violation warning.
This enraged Serena Williams and upset her sense of justice and fairness. She is not someone who wants to win by cheating.
And it’s never called especially in such a big match.
Destroying her racket was another code violation and loss of a point.
Complaining to the chair umpire cost her a game.
All of this marred a spectacular match and first slam title for Naomi Osaka. Who is usually just bubbly and adorable after matches. She was saddened to win this way.
Umpires and officials are best when we don’t notice them. They are best when they don’t affect the outcome.
Without the coaching violation warning, the racket destruction wouldn’t have been a lost point. And there wouldn’t have been anything to complain about. It’s just sad.
