There is no doubt that race baiting helped Donald Trump win the election.
I try not to watch or read too much news these days for sanity but I do catch stories.
A four year old and his mother being deported back to Honduras from Pennsylvania where they could well be killed due to gangs. For some reason, even a United States Senator can’t stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It makes no sense. Reported today from NBC 10 news in Philadelphia.
Dreamers going to school who Trump said he wouldn’t go after facing deportation. What is better and more sane: Giving kids educated in American schools often for most of their lives the chance for college, citizenship and professional careers. Or deportating them after their family and brothers and sisters (who can be citizens if born here) live in this country. People deserve the chance to live lives. Citizenship allows them to work above the table and get certifications like teacher, lawyer, doctor or even barber.
Stories about a business owner of a restaurant with dozens of employees, an American wife and American kids being deported from South Bend, Indiana despite the mayor and I think congressional pleas.
Or that I read today in the paper, a Derby, CT father being deported again with an American wife and kids despite a local congressman trying to help. And protests at the courthouse.
The reason we have so many undocumented aliens in America is the difficulty in becoming citizens. Most of the examples I gave were people coming to immigration offices for their yearly review. Being deported for things like a broken taillight ticket.
We can and must do better. Like Anthony Bourdain said in the Parts Unknown: Los Angeles episode this Sunday if we removed all undocumented immigrants from this country overnight it would destroy our economy. Something like 10% of people in cities like Los Angeles are undocumented. They often do the hard work of gardening, farm work, construction, food prep, dishwashing and baby sitting. And they generally get far worse treatment and benefits since they are under the table.
The millions of undocumented immigrants in our country help make America great. Many have been here for decades and aren’t citizens due to ruthless and insane policies. We can and must do better.
