I have been on a graphic novel kick of late, in fact most of the books I have finished this week have been graphic novels, 2 Chris Ware’s Acme Novelty Library 17 and 18, BB Wolf and the 3 LPs, and Habibi. I also finished Cannery Row.
And although I found BB Wolf and Habibi richer, Chris Ware is a completely unique voice in graphic novels. He has a very distinctive style and tends to concentrate on people that feel like outsiders in life, whether the tale of woman with one leg in #18, or the tales of a dorky kid and awkward teachers in #17 or the tale of the life of a schnook in #20.
He is someone anyone who likes graphic novels should check out. I have found his books through Minerva, the state of Maine inter-library loan like system which is one of my favorite things ever.
His style is bizarre sometimes with very small print, and a weird way to move around the page. Although I would love to see him do a longer and richer work that could earn one of my rarer ***** ratings. #20 is my favorite of his so far.
